Project Somos

I have been working on 2 quilts for a while now, my ambitions were to have them completed by Christmas, clearly that didn't happen! My daughter in law Kelly and her mom are truly talented quilters, and I can tell you I am NOT.

I have a purpose in mind for my quilts, PROJECT SOMOS. Back in September we watched a Canadian Reality show called "Project Guatemala". It was really interesting to watch a bunch of spoilt Canadian 20 somethings get dumped/duped into working at a Guatemalan Orphanage. They built a community centre for the surrounding community within the the orphanages compound.

I was interested by the concept and I did some more research online. I discovered that the orphanage is not running yet, and they were looking for a unique quilt for each of the children when they do arrive. Children in orphanages do not have anything that is really their own, they even share clothing. I brought this to the attention of my very qualified relative quilter, but she was very pregnant and frankly couldn't take on a new project!

Kelly advised me that she had 50 quilt blocks from Grandma, who got them from a friend, whose sister gave them to her friend......yes, it is hard to follow the trail here, just stay with me!

I decided to give this "quilting" thing a go. With some good advise and some old experience with a sewing machine I started to piece these 50 blocks into 2 separate quilts.

Project Somos has invited us to visit while we are in Guatemala, and hopefully we can do that and deliver the quilts.
